Settlers Crossing Kusenberger Log Cabin

Property Description

An 1847 cabin, among the area's oldest homes

Some places you visit. This one you step into. Built in 1847, the Kusenberger Log Cabin is said to be the oldest house the settlers raised outside Fredericksburg - a single room of hand-hewn logs and stone that has kept its footing for the better part of two centuries. It went up when Texas was barely two years into statehood, put up by German families who built with what the land gave them, and built to last. The floors are the original stone, worn smooth by generations who came before you.

Inside, it's small in the way old cabins are small - and warm for the same reason. The sitting room gathers around a large stone fireplace, the kind that was once the whole point of a house. There's room for two, and not much more, which is exactly what makes it feel like a retreat rather than a rental. Couples fall for it. So do people who just want to be quiet for a while.

The porch is the cabin's best hour - stone, running the full length of the house, with rockers set out to catch the evening and the view of the Hill Country beyond. Friendly farm animals graze the grounds, and the wildlife comes and goes on its own schedule: deer at dusk, birdsong at first light. Nights come dark, the way they should this far from town. When you want to go deeper, our Fredericksburg AI Historical Guide can walk you through the cabin's past and the families who built Settlers Crossing.
